Pasta Gratins with Goat Cheese, Sage and Mushrooms

I am known to eat a whole pot of pasta in one sitting (and a jar of Nutella if I feel festive, but that is not our topic today). What’s more unfortunate is once I made a fatal mistake of telling this to my mother.

Ever since that day, her first question on the phone is “What did you eat tonight?” – her voice fading close to the end of the sentence. I guess she is still scared to hear the answer… She has every right to. And let me tell you – this is not the first incident. Back in my high school days, on my way home from school, I would get off the school bus and pay a visit to the supermarket to buy a quart of chocolate ice cream every single day. I would sneak it to my room in my backpack and the whole thing would be gone before dinner. The next morning, the empty box would be hidden in my backpack on my way to school. Clementine and Olive Oil Cake

Sweeter than an orange, larger than a tangerine. This seedless, deep orange-colored beauty is called a clementine.

You can buy them for their looks alone. I had a different motive. You remember my “Monday morning syndrome” cake? I was in desperate need of one this week.

Inspired by the “Olive Oil and Sherry Pound Cake” recipe from Alice Medrich’s book “Pure Dessert”, this cake combines the floral and sweet taste of clementines with a rich extra-virgin olive oil – a very thoughtful gift from a friend of mine whose father has an olive grove located in Southwest Turkey.

Chocolate and Chestnut Buche de Noel

Here’s the Chocolate and Chestnut Buche de Noel with Marzipan Mushrooms and Acorns we enjoyed at the New Year’s Eve dinner party. Come December, there would be a debate at the Mansion on what to prepare for the dinner party. For dessert, a few would always insist on a chocolate and raspberry cake, just because nothing can top that. Some wouldn’t even participate in the debate, since they pretty much enjoy everything. For me, it has to be something new. For one, I have a food blog and it is always nice to blog about something new. Secondly, how do we know the cake we ate last year was the best without exhausting all the possibilities from the piles of cookbooks I bought over the years? Someone needs to put them into good use, right?
