Artichoke

It was right after my graduation… Baking Fairy and I were residing at the foggy 22nd and Balboa in San Francisco. I was desperately looking for work, she was still studying… We needed a change, so we decided to take a trip to LA. To make the trip more enjoyable, we decided to take Highway 1. I guess it added a couple of exhausting hours to the trip, but it was one of the best 8 hours ever.

Long weekend

Thanks to the national holiday on Friday, we had a long weekend in İstanbul. The weather was spectacular. On Friday, it was Mahir & Vera treating a small group of friends to an extra delicious barbeque with Vera’s tasty appetizers on the side. The red onion she baked in a clay pot was by far the tastiest red onions I have eaten in my life (bottom right).

Sweet & Sour Red Onions (Vera’s Recipe): Skin 3 medium size red onions leaving the head so that the layers stay intact. Cut the onions into 8 equal parts, mix with vinegar, mustard, honey and olive oil (2 tablespoons each), transfer to a clay pot and pop it in the oven for 40 minutes at 400 F/220 C.

Artichoke with peas

Artichoke

Artichoke in olive oil is a traditional Turkish appetizer. It has many variations when it comes to the topping, such as potatoes & carrots, broad beans & dill or as in my case: Peas.

This is one of those vegetable dishes, which I hated eating growing up as a child and started treasuring it in my 20s.
