Raspberry and Lemon Muffins
April 17th, 2008 | Category: Baked Goods, Cakes

It has been a hectic week. I can’t even lift a finger, let alone bake. But I was instantly off the couch when I saw this. I adapted Lara’s recipe according to what I had in the freezer and an hour later I was enjoying these moist muffins full of tangy berries.
Below you will see a few tips and an amazing technique I learned from Dorie’s books, which transform an ordinary muffin into an extraordinary one.
Raspberries used in the recipe are frozen and that is another plus of this recipe. Always keep a box of frozen raspberries (or any other berry) in your freezer and you’re good to go anytime you crave something sweet. Mix the dry and wet ingredients in separate bowls, spoon them into muffin cups and you’re done. It is really that easy. Plus, there is not much to clean up afterwards. That is always a good thing!

Korova Cookies
March 31st, 2008 | Category: Baked Goods, Chocolate, Cookies

Today, Cafe Fernando turns two years old and I would just die if I don’t mark this occasion with my most favorite cookies of all time: Korova Cookies.
These cookies made their debut in “Paris Sweets: Great Desserts from the City’s Best Pastry Shops” by Dorie Greenspan. There is another very impressive person behind the recipe - the man Vogue magazine once called “The Picasso of Pastry.” No, it’s not David Lebovitz (he is the Monet). It’s Pierre Herme.

Bagels
March 23rd, 2008 | Category: Baked Goods, Breakfast

I am feeling homesick. It has been 3 years, 5 months and 11 days since I last visited San Francisco. Old tricks run short nowadays. Cruising rentals in the Marina at Craigslist just doesn’t cut it. I am getting bored watching the “Weeping Women” and the sandwich shack on the Marina Green. I am constantly on the look out for other peeping opportunities. A recent discovery is a science fiction TV series called “Journeyman”. It is about a San Francisco reporter who travels through time and changes people’s lives. After almost all of his travels, he wakes up somewhere in the Marina - usually at the Palace of Fine Arts. And I go, “Ohhh, that’s my old neighborhood”, “Ahh, that’s the street corner where I made out with…” Anyways, what I really want to say is, I want my 450 square feet studio back! I missed the flower guy across the street with 5 feet long hair and dirty nails. I missed the mini quakes each time the bus turned the corner. And, most of all, I missed my tiny kitchen..
So what do these all have to do with bagels, you ask… The short answer is, I needed a familiar taste to soothe me.
