Cafe Fernando iPhone Application
January 14th, 2011 | Category: Memoir/Meme/Misc.
I am proud to introduce Cafe Fernando’s new iPhone application!
Almost the entire Cafe Fernando recipe archive is included in the application, as well as a few new recipes – all together with photos. The application also has a very cool “Shopping Cart” feature that transfers the list of ingredients for any given recipe into the shopping cart, so you can see what you need to buy as you push your cart through the aisles. That means: No more printing recipes! And as you put the ingredients into your “real” shopping cart, you check them off the list and they disappear.
Cool, right? And the best part is, the application is free.
I have been working on this new iPhone application for a while now and was so excited to see my Hazelnut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies on the screen, I just couldn’t help but dunk it in a glass of milk!
This application wouldn’t be possible without the agency who approached me to develop the application in the first place: Project House. They’re based in Istanbul and one of the hardest working partners I’ve ever had. A huge thanks to the team at Project House for making this possible.
Actually, the application was launched a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to wait for a few minor technical issues to be fixed before the announcement.
By the way, the agency reports that there were a few hundred downloads already! If you’re one of them, please do upgrade. Everything is running smoothly now.
The application launches like this:
Me, eating a brownie! And then comes the “featured recipe”, which is randomly selected from the recipe archive.
There’s the main menu on the bottom with the following icons: “Featured”, “Recipes”, “Search”, “Favorites” and “More”.
Featured - After the welcome screen comes the “Featured” recipe page. When you click on the “Recipe” icon under the photo, it takes you to the actual recipe page.
Then you’ll see three icons on the bottom -”Ingredients” and “Method” are pretty self-explanatory. The “Favorite” icon lets you add the recipe to your favorites list, which is easily accessible from the main menu and once it is added, you don’t have to go through the categories to find it again.
The ingredients are all on one screen and the method section is broken down to steps. You can scroll left (or right) to navigate through the method section (see green arrow below).
Both under ingredients and method, you’ll see the “add to list” icon, which let’s you add the ingredient list of the recipe into your shopping cart.
Recipes - I’ve organized the recipes the same way they are categorized in my blog.
You click on a category, and it displays the recipes included in that category with thumbnails.
You see the orange arrow on the bottom? Those white dots show you how many pages there are in that category. For instance, if you see two dots, that means there’s a second page in that category. So you scroll to the left to see the rest of the thumbnails.
Search - You can either search by category…
… or by ingredient name.
Favorites - This is the place where all your favorites will be stored for easier access.
More - Then comes the “More” section. At the top is the coolest feature of the application: Shopping Cart.
Shopping Cart – So, let’s say you’re off work, heading home, but still dreaming about the Devil’s Food Cake you read about on your lunch break. You’re tired, but just can’t take it off of your mind and decide to stop by the supermarket to buy the ingredients… You launch my new iPhone application, find the Devil’s Food Cake recipe, add it to your shopping list, and voila! The ingredient list is automatically transferred into the shopping cart.
So when you’re at the supermarket shopping for ingredients, you take your iPhone out, go to the shopping cart, choose the recipe you wish and start checking off (click on the red box and hold for a second) the ingredients as you put them in your actual shopping cart.
And they’ll disappear one by one.
Photo Gallery - The photo gallery section under the More category has photos from my travels and kitchen adventures and will be updated every month.
Also included in the more section is an about page, a direct link to my blog (launches in Safari), an e-mail button (for you to tell me how awesome this application is or for a casual hello) and the share button.
Share - This feature lets you share the application’s link via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail.
For instance, I’m sure, as soon as you read this post, you’ll download the application, then go directly to the “More” page, select share, click on the Twitter button and share my new application with all your followers
After you click on the Twitter icon, it directs you to a Twitter login page, and then an automatic message appears for you to tweet:
Banner & Advertising - As I mentioned, the new Cafe Fernando iPhone application is free of charge. There’s a section at the top where it says “Banner”, which is an ad space. I am currently using the iAd Network and if you’re living in one of the 8 countries it operates in, then you’ll be seeing an ad on top. If not, then that area will be blank. By the way, I am looking for a long-term partner for that section, and if you’re interested, please send me an e-mail for rates & terms.
In time, there will be many more updates, and through those updates the application will develop further and get better. If you’d like to suggest new features or provide any other feedback, I’m all ears. Hope you like the application.
Now visit the iTunes store and download my new iPhone application!
